Testing alternatives to LinkedIn: a hands-on checklist, including what transfers if you switch

This is a working checklist for anyone in 2026 who wants to try an alternative to part or all of LinkedIn without guessing. Tick the boxes as you go; nothing is saved or sent anywhere, and ticks clear when you close the page.

Before you try anything

Write down which LinkedIn functions you actually use: profile, jobs, messages, posting, learning, selling or hiring. Pick one of those functions to test an alternative for. Testing everything at once makes the results unreadable. Request your LinkedIn data archive from the data privacy settings. It can take some time to arrive, so ask early. Note the renewal date of any paid LinkedIn plan so you can decide before it renews. Decide what "working" would look like for you, such as relevant replies, useful listings or time saved, before you start.

Illustrative, not a measurement. The phase lengths are a suggestion only; a sensible length depends on how often your field produces responses.

Running a side by side trial

Keep your LinkedIn profile current during the test so the comparison is fair. Set up the alternative properly: a complete profile or listing, not a placeholder. Keep a plain note of where each useful contact, listing or reply came from. Avoid applying to the same job through two channels; it can create duplicate records at the employer. Put a reminder in your calendar a few days before any free trial becomes a paid plan.

Judging any alternative

Is your field or region actually active on it in 2026, or only in general? Can you state in one sentence what it does, and in another where it stops being useful for you? Is pricing published on the vendor's own site, including how it varies by country and billing period? Can you export your data, contacts and content from it in a usable format? Do its terms let you take relationships off the platform, or restrict it? Does it offer privacy settings you are comfortable managing? Are its claims about results backed by anything you can check yourself? Treat unverifiable user counts and success figures with care.

What transfers if you switch

Some things leave with you as files. Others exist only because of the platform and stay behind.

What the decision depends on

Whether to switch, combine or stay depends on which function you tested, whether the alternative produced something you value in your field and region, and how much you would lose from the items that do not transfer. For many people the outcome is a mix: LinkedIn kept for one purpose, an alternative used for another. That is a reasonable result, not a failure to decide.
